Alabama Car Insurance

Car Insurance » Alabama

Owning a motor vehicle is in Alabama is expensive. The costs of gas and repairs on their own can add up, while automobile insurance can take a nice bite out of your wallet every six months. Unfortunately for Alabama residents, there's no way around ponying up for an Alabama car insurance policy. They are required under state law.

According to the Alabama Motor Vehicle Division, even licensed drivers are restricted from operating a motor vehicle designed to be used on public roads when the vehicle does not have a current liability insurance policy covering its operation. You are not able to register a vehicle for the first time, or re-register a vehicle, if that vehicle does not have valid liability insurance.

The minimum amount of liability insurance needed in the state of Alabama is $25,000 in bodily injury and death liability, $50,000 for all injuries and deaths in an accident, and $25,000 in property damage. Insurance policies that do not meet these minimum levels of coverage are not deemed valid by the state of Alabama. You must also have the policy issued to you by a car insurance company qualified to sell insurance in Alabama.

But even if you don't personally own insurance, you can still drive a vehicle owned by another person if that vehicle is covered with a liability insurance policy. This can be risky, though, particularly if you get into an accident, since it will affect the policyholder's premium and could get them dropped by their auto insurance company.
