Arkansas Car Insurance

Car Insurance » Arkansas

Liability insurance is required in Arkansas for trucks, SUV's, motorcycles, cars and vans. The minimum amount of coverage required in Arkansas is $25,000 for property damage and $25,000 for bodily injury. Auto insurance is not required in Arkansas for off-road vehicles or vehicles that are not operable. Proof of insurance is required to register a vehicle in Arkansas.

Arkansas is also near the cutting edge of car insurance technology, with an electronic database of insurance policies in the state. Basically, insurance carriers submit changes in insurance to the database--new policies, cancellations, changes in coverage, etc. This does not mean, however, that you do not need to carry proof of auto insurance--you still need to be able to produce it if a peace officer requests it.

If you're stopped by a peace officer in Arkansas for any reason, they will usually ask for proof of insurance. If you fail to produce it, you could be subject to a number of penalties. For a first offense, the fine could be up to $250. If you fail to show your proof of insurance at the time of a traffic stop or accident, your license could be suspended until you are able to produce proof of insurance. If you get caught without proper insurance again after the first time, the penalties increase steadily with each offense up to a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to a year of jail time.

Interestingly, when you purchase liability coverage, the state of Arkansas requires an insurance company to offer you the chance to buy coverage for uninsured and underinsured motorists, both for property damage and bodily injury. This is a very proactive approach to the problem of making sure that people have enough coverage. No matter what laws are in place, there will always be people who insist on driving without insurance, and it would be a shame for a legal driver to have to pay for their mistake.
