Connecticut Car Insurance

Car Insurance » Connecticut

Like most states in America, car insurance in Connecticut is required. The state, mandates that all registered vehicles and drivers carry a minimum amount of liability automobile insurance. In order to drive legally within the state, drivers are mandated to carry specific minimums of coverage. According to the Connecticut Department of Insurance, each driver is required to have a minimum of $20K per person in bodily injury liability coverage per person, $40K for bodily injury per accident and $10K for property damage liability per accident. These requirements are all audited and enforced by the Department of Motor Vehicles statewide.

Although the state requires liability coverage (and encourages comprehensive coverage), Connecticut does not require drivers to carry comprehensive coverage. This and more coverage may be required in addition to the liability by your financial institution, lender or other bank, if you are driving a financed vehicle. Most will require you present proof of full coverage prior to releasing the automobile to you.

Compliance to Connecticut’s mandatory coverage is works in concert with their mandatory reporting laws. These statutes require that all insurance companies notify the Department of Motor Vehicles in the event of any and all cancelled insurance policies. Once the DMV runs appropriate checks to see if another policy has been reported or whether the vehicle has been sold or transferred or the owner has moved out of state, they determine whether to act administratively. If the registration is still active, the driver is then sent a ‘Warning Notice.’ The registered owner is then given the opportunity to sign a written consent, obtain insurance and pay a $200 fine. If these requirements are not met, the driver will be subject to further penalties. This might include, losing their right to register any vehicle in the state of Connecticut as well as a revocation of their current registration and/or license.
