The state of Georgia requires all drivers to purchase car insurance policies in order to register their vehicles, renew their license plates, and drive their vehicles legally. Georgia also requires drivers to purchase policies that provide at least a minimum amount of liability car insurance coverage. A driver's insurance policy must include at least $25,000 in bodily injury insurance coverage for each person injured in any one accident and at least $50,000 in bodily injury insurance coverage for any number of people injured in one accident. Drivers must also carry at least $25,000 in property damage coverage for any one accident.

Drivers in Georgia must carry written proof of auto insurance with them at all times. They must also display this proof of insurance to any law enforcement officer that requests it. A GA driver should obtain a proof of insurance card from the insurer at the time of policy purchase or renewal. If a driver is found to be without the minimum amount of insurance coverage, the state of Georgia will charge the individual with a misdemeanor that carries a minimum fine of $200. The individual's license may also be suspended. An individual who has insurance but fails to provide proof of the policy to a law enforcement officer will incur a fine of $25.

Though Georgia drivers are required to purchase a minimum amount of Georgia car insurance coverage, some may choose to purchase other types of coverage as well. Drivers in Georgia may voluntarily purchase medical payments coverage, which is insurance that pays medical bills related to injuries sustained by the insured driver or his passengers. Drivers may also purchase uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, which pays for damages caused by a motorist who has insufficient insurance coverage. Finally, some drivers may purchase collision coverage, which pays for repair or replacement costs for the insured motorist's vehicle, regardless of whether he was at fault for the accident that caused the damage.
