Car Insurance » Illinois

The state of Illinois requires all drivers who are residents of the state to purchase an automobile insurance policy before they can drive legally. This law was put in place to protect drivers who can't afford to pay for the damage or injuries they cause in automobile accidents. The law also protects those motorists and passengers who are injured in an accident caused by a driver who can't afford to pay for damages and injuries.

To comply with Illinois car insurance laws, drivers must maintain at least a minimum level of coverage. As of 2011, Illinois requires drivers to carry at least $20,000 of bodily injury insurance for the death or injury of any one individual in one accident and $40,000 of bodily injury coverage for the death or injury of any number of people in one accident. Drivers must also carry at least $15,000 of property damage coverage for any one accident. Finally, all Illinois motorists must have at least $20,000 worth of uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage for any individual injured or killed in an accident and at least $40,000 of uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage for all persons injured or killed in an accident.

The law requires Illinois drivers to carry a proof of insurance card in their vehicles at all times and show it to law enforcement officers upon request. Motorists should receive a copy of this card from their car insurance companies when the policy is either purchased or renewed. When Illinois motorists renew their vehicle registrations each year, they must show this card to a state employee and sign a document stating that they are properly insured.
