If you currently live in Louisiana or are thinking about relocating to the state, then you are required by state law to have Louisiana car insurance. If you do not have at least the minimum car insurance, then the penalties can be severe. The state of Louisiana requires that all drivers have a minimum liability coverage. At this point you have a three day grace period to show proof of insurance to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. If you are able to provide a valid insurance card, then you will be able to retrieve your license plates and get your car out of impoundment. However, without a current and valid proof of insurance you will not only pay a fine, but your registration will be be suspended. The first time offense for driving without auto insurance is a $75-$100 fine. If you fail to learn your lesson and are caught again driving without car insurance, then the fine can range from $200-$700. Furthermore, if your registration is suspended you will also be forced to pay a reinstatement fee.
