Maine Car Insurance
Car Insurance » Maine
Maine law demands that its resident drivers have an auto insurance liability policy which meets their minimum requirements. Liability coverage is a must in the “Dirigo” state and it is 50/100/25 which translates to $50,000 per person for bodily injury, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for damage to personal property which usually is for a car but can extend to damage to a fence, home or other personal item within limits.
The law in this state also requires a mandatory minimum of $2,000 med payment coverages which pays for medical expenses for a specific period after the accident has occurred. This also includes coverage for funeral expenses and the payments are made in spite of who is at fault in the accident.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance coverages is also mandatory and there is a $25,000/$50,000 minimum coverage required by the state. This might seem unnecessary but it protects you if your car is hit by another driver who might be on the road without having the required insurance or too little of it. This will cover any bodily injuries sustained by you or passengers in your car at the time of the accident. While uninsured and underinsured motorist property damage is not mandatory you should consider it so that repairs to your car will be taken care of by the insurance. Get this only if you do not have collision coverage.
These are all the minimum amounts required by law but it is always wise to purchase more than the minimum in order protect your assets from additional claims. You will of course see an increase in your premium with the extra coverage but it won’t be by much more.
Finally you must always be prepared to present your proof of Maine car insurance if you are ever in an accident or pulled over by a law enforcement officer.
