Maryland Car Insurance

Car Insurance » Maryland

Maryland requires that all drivers carry insurance on any registered vehicle. An insurance company that is licensed by the state is the only insurance company that can provide you with insurance. Maryland requires that you have a minimum coverage on each insured vehicle:

~ $30,000 bodily injury per person

~ $60,000 bodily injury for two or more people

~ $15,000 for property damage.

The liability insurance for your vehicle must be purchased from an approved insurance company or an authorized agent that works for a licensed company. Liability insurance pays for damages, including death of another person, caused by you.

You must also carry uninsured motorist insurance. This insurance pays for any damages on your person that were caused by someone who doesn’t have insurance. The third type of coverage you must carry is personal injury. This portion of the insurance provides up to $2,500 for any expenses accrued because of an accident. If you opt for full personal injury, it covers you and any other person riding in your vehicle at the time of the accident. Limited personal injury insurance does not cover you or members of your family that are over 16 years of age.

Insurance Cert (FR-19):

The insurance certification is a document that you sign when you register a vehicle or renew your vehicle’s registration. The signed document states that you know that you are required to carry at least the minimum liability insurance during the registration period, and if not, that you will not drive the vehicle.

An insurance company issues the certification and it is valid for 30 days. You must bring the original certificate to the Motor Vehicle Administration office (MVA). The MVA will not accept a photocopy, but it will accept a faxed copy, as long as a registered insurance agent faxes the copy.

Address Changes

If you change your address, you must notify the Motor Vehicle Administration with the new information, along with the vehicle title number, the new insurance company’s name and the new policy number. You can mail the information in or call the administration with the required information.
