Mississippi Car Insurance
Car Insurance » Mississippi
The state of Mississippi requires all drivers to meet minimum requirements for liability car insurance for their vehicles. Drivers do not have to show proof of insurance when registering a vehicle, but law enforcement officials can ask for proof of insurance if they pull a driver over for another reason. Drivers found to be without sufficient insurance will be fined $1,000 and cannot drive again for a year unless they purchase insurance and show an insurance card as proof.
In Mississippi, bodily injury liability insurance must cover at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. This type of auto insurance pays for medical costs of injured individuals when the insured driver is at fault. These people might be pedestrians, bikers, the driver or passengers in other vehicles involved in the accident. However, because medical care is so expensive, many drivers in Mississippi elect to purchase more bodily injury liability insurance to help reduce the chance of getting sued for damages that exceed their insurance limits.
Mississippi also requires all drivers to have at least $25,000 of auto insurance for property damage. This insurance will pay for repairs to other vehicles involved in an accident or to personal property that the driver damages in a collision. For example, it might pay to repair or replace a fence that a driver knocks over. As with personal injury liability, drivers should consider purchasing more property damage liability insurance to adequately pay for a totaled vehicle with a value of more than $25,000.
Mississippi does not require drivers to carry insurance for uninsured motorists or underinsured motorists. However, because Mississippi does not regulate insurance during the car registration process, this makes it easier for uninsured or underinsured motorists to be on the roads. Therefore, it is wise for drivers to purchase these types of coverage to protect themselves from financial loss in the case of an accident with a motorist who does not have adequate Mississippi car insurance.
