Montana Car Insurance

Car Insurance » Montana

If you are a resident of Montana you have several ways to legally provide proof of financial responsibly for your vehicle. The primary way to do this is through the purchase of liability insurance but there are several other alternatives that residents can use in lieu of Montana car insurance.

The first option is to take out a bond with a surety company that has authorization to do business in the state. If you prefer you can use two individual sureties who are legal residents of the state and they must own Montana real estate. The combined equities of the two individuals must be twice the amount of the bond.

The second alternative is to make a cash deposit of $55,000 or more at the office of the state treasurer. For exact details of the procedure for doing this you will need to contact the state treasurer. If you have more than 25 vehicles registered under your name you can go the route of a self-insurance certificate.

The majority of drivers prefer to go the traditional route and purchase liability insurance from a reputable agency. The minimum requirements in this case is $25,000 for injury or death for one person, $50,000 for injury or death for more than one person per accident and $10,000 for damage to property.

Always consider getting more coverage than the state required minimum in order to protect yourself and your assets since in most cases these minimums will not cover the expenses of a major accident. You might want to consider uninsured/underinsured coverage and collision coverage to cover repairs to your car.

Always carry proof of insurance with you in your vehicle and in Montana that can be the insurance certificate, an authorization certificate which will provide proof of a bond, a letter detailing your cash deposit at the state treasurer or a letter of confirmation if you are self-insured.
