Oklahoma Car Insurance

Car Insurance » Oklahoma

Oklahoma is one of many states that require a driver or an owner of a car to have car insurance, but their requirement is not as extensive as some. The state requires only liability coverage, which basically protects you from having to pay for the other driver's expenses in the event of an accident that you cause. The minimum amounts of coverage are $25,000 per person for bodily injury and $25,000 for proerty damage. This is enough to keep a driver legal, but it would probably be a good idea to carry considerably more.

If someone is caught driving without insurance in Oklahoma, they can be fined up to $250 as part of a misdemeanor judgement. In addition to this, they could have their license suspended and, in some cases, put in jail for up to 30 days. They would have then wished they had followed the law and obtained Oklahoma auto insurance.

Liability does not end with the criminal charges for not having insurance in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is one of the states, sometimes caled "tort" states, that makes drivers financially responsible for the damage they do or the injuries they cause. Basically, the degree of fault is determined for each driver and they are assigned how much money they have to pay as a result. If someone causes an accident, they could find themselves owing a lot of money.

Even if someone has the minimum of insurance, they would not have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. Without these coverages, someone could find themselves with a lot of repair costs for an accident that wasn't their fault if the other driver isn't insured or doesn't have enough insurance. Even though the other driver is financially liable, people without insurance often do not have the financial resources to pay for a lot of damages or injuries. Having enough insurance is a must.
