Tennessee Car Insurance

The state of Tennessee has specific car insurance requirements for all drivers and vehicles, including financial responsibility and liability requirements. These legal requirements are the minimum amounts and regulations, but a car that has a loan through a bank or other lien holder may have additional requirements for the duration of the loan. Always check the loan information to make sure you are meeting these requirements, along with those that are required by law.

While the state of Tennessee does not require that residents show a proof of financial responsibility when registering a car, you should still be prepared since it is a legal requirement. This also stands true for renewing a license in Tennessee. Ways that you can prove financial responsibility is to purchase liability insurance for the car through a licensed insurance carrier that is authorized to sell auto insurance in Tennessee. A second option is to post a cash bond, or cash deposit, with the Tennessee Department of Safety if insurance is not available immediately.

All licensed passenger vehicles in the state of Tennessee must have a minimum amount of liability insurance. Collision and other insurance options are available for these vehicles, but not required by law. The minimum requirements for liability is $25,000 listed for one injury or death, $50,000 listed for all injuries or death or $15,000 listed for one accident property damage. These are the minimum legal requirements, however an auto lien holder may have other requirements in order to keep the loan through their company.

The Department of Safety issues penalties for failure to maintain financial responsibility with car insurance in Tennessee. If a law officer pulls your vehicle over for a violation or you are part of a car accident, you may receive a fine of up to $100, suspension of driving license and/or a STOP placed against your car file that will prevent a license renewal until it is cleared. The only way to regain financial responsibility is to pay the fine off in a timely manner, show new proof of financial responsibility and get your drivers license reinstated.
